Remembering September 11th

I'm sure you can all remember exactly what you were doing the
moment you found out about the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
I can remember the coworker that shared this news with me,
the activity my class was working on, and the students who were in my
third grade class.  It's a day none of us will ever forget.

Since my group of students are 9 year olds, I don't want
to frighten them by overwhelming them with all the pictures from that day.
BUT I  feel it is so important  to talk with my students  about this day.

Listed below are the things I shared with my third graders ,and they couldn't
wait to get to this part of our school day.  So many had things they wanted to share
that their parents or grandparents had shared with them about this day.

I started off the morning by doing a brain break of a youtube video of the story " The Man Who Walked Between The Towers".

Then later that morning, I showed my students this Brainpop video on 9/11.
Click on the picture above to be taken to the link of this video.

After we discussed the video, I shared with my students this video on children remembering this date a year later.

Finally, we created a class book called " We Remember September 11".  Each student was given a sheet of paper in which to draw a picture of what they picture in their mind when they hear the date September 11.  Then students had to write about it on the lines below.  Here's a look at our book.
If  you would like a copy of the cover of our book and the form I created
for my students to draw their picture and write their sentence leave your e-mail in the feedback form, and I will send it to you.  The file is too large to place on Google Docs even  when I compress it.

Finally, to all the men and women who serve in our military, the firefighters, and police officers, thank you so much for protecting our freedoms and securing our safety.
God bless you!

Those are great resources for talking about 9/11. I'll definitely keep them in mind next year. I just talked to my kids, giving them the basics (with me almost in tears) and then we said the pledge (which we usually only do on Fridays) and talked about ways to be patriotic.

Thanks for sharing your way of remembering 9/11. In my area, many families were affected. I would appreciate a copy of your book.
