Extra! Extra! Read All About It..

My Sweet third graders were so excited to have a new station added to the classroom today.

My students now have a newspaper station that has activities with literacy and math.

I have wanted to expose my students to as much nonfiction and informational kinds of text as I could throughout the year.  Aside from online resources and books from our library, my students have access to Scholastic News and Time Magazine for Kids ( Donor's Choose) and a weekly subscription to our local newspaper.  They have been so excited to look at these resources.

I wanted to create a place in which students can use this informational text in a variety of ways and on a daily basis because I won't be able to fit in a whole class lesson every single week using these items.   So...  I created this "newspaper station".  I created 48 different activity cards with a student work mat that are based on ELA and math.   I also created 8 cards that use terms from the newspaper in which students must search for these items in the paper and cut and paste them onto their work mat.

To set up my station I needed a large work area for my students to conduct their activities.  I chose a table towards the back of the room in which students could stretch out and lay their papers on the floor.  In the station I included the chart of activities.  I purchased the chart from the Dollar Store.  I also purchased a caddy to place highlighters, crayons, pencils, scissors, glue, and markers.  I also have several copies of the work mat in this caddy as well.

My students couldn't wait to try out this station today!

If you would like more information about the newspaper station unit I created just click on the picture below to be taken to my TPT store.

Have a fabulous week!
My class will be busy conducting research for their animal habitats and participating in some activities on perimeter and area.

Thanks for stopping by!
